A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Susan began drawing at the age of five. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1973 with a BA in Fine Art. Upon graduation, she pursued a career as a professional ceramicist. Within two years she was Artist in Residence for the State of West Virginia. For the next 13 years, she was widely recognized as one of the most successful production Master Potters in the Southeast.
She retired from full-time potting in 1987 when an adventurous spirit called. She moved to the red-rock country of Sedona, Arizona to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a painter. Supporting herself by conducting Jeep tours and leading the ceramics department at the Sedona Art Center, Susan returned to the serious study of painting.
It was in Sedona that she met her most influential teacher and mentor, New Zealander Adele
